What Makes CSS Servers So Appealing To Gamers

By Alfonso Hinton

For many years Counterstrike was extremely popular and then came along CSS servers when Half Life 2 was released. Many people stuck with 1.6 but others were converted especially when they upgraded their computer and found the graphics were so much better than the old game.

Counterstrike offers fast paced gameplay, or for the more astute a tactical shoot out. Different maps are offered to match each gameplay. You can be up against as little as four, or as many as 32 opponents, so you have to adapt your gaming accordingly. Clans enjoy playing either 5 v 5 or 7 v 7 but smaller or larger teams have been known. Counterstrike offers two main types of gameplay- either with the terrorists planting a bomb, or the counter terrorists rescuing a VIP.

The game was made popular for the fact that you could put so many different plug-ins and add-ons to your server to allow you to make things different and unique. Many cool game types such as surf and Warcraft are available. The admin tools made available make admin on the server an easy life. RCON is great and powerful but has clumsy commands.

For every mod there is a custom map. Some maps are specifically built for certain mods, others work on all gametypes. The original game types - bomb and hostage are still catered for. This is no doubt because these original gametypes are the oldest and favourite.

Counterstrike uses weapons with different advantages and disadvantages from all round the world. Each weapon has been created to be balanced within the game and mimic real word weapons in terms of power, recoil and accuracy. CS gamers still squabble today as to which weapons are best.

It's fairly easy to setup a Counterstrike server, and you can host multiple game servers from one dedicated server. It also allows better control as you are able to edit your own start line and thus you can change player slots and the start map.

As well as being able to communicate in game by text, you can also use the voice-powered communication tool. In game voice is very easy to use, but the quality isn't great. Hardcore gamers generally opt for a dedicated voice server such as Ventrilo or Teamspeak 3. The benefit of using a dedicated voice server is this can be private to the rabble in game!
